English Majors to Read Work at Event Saturday

"Four English majors will read their original creative works as the Center for Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) holds its annual Taste of the Arts Event on Saturday, March 2 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Greenly Center.  This celebration of the Arts will feature a “taste” the visual and performing arts at Bloomsburg University, including BU student musical ensembles, choral groups, dancers, theatre groups, art studio creations, writers, and other performers.  There will also be an Art Studio demonstration.

The schedule for the participating English majors:
  • 3:30 p.m. –  Anna Olivieri and Rachel Lowry will both read creative nonfiction
  • 4:20 p.m. – Sarah Goulet will read creative nonfiction and Keyen Bingaman will read poetry

The event is open to everyone, and you can stop in for a little while or stay the whole afternoon to enjoy the exciting creative performances presented by BU students."

Hope to see you there!

Choose Your Concentration

As mid-semester approaches, it's time for us to begin to think about scheduling classes for next semester. Given that you've already chosen to be an English major, there is one more step: choosing your concentration. Within the department, there are four major concentrations: Literature, Creative Writing, Professional Writing and Digital Rhetoric, and Teaching of English at the Secondary Level. Professional Writing and Digital Rhetoric is the newest concentration, and one you may not be as familiar with. This concentration encompasses technical skills, and is a great option for those interested in business writing, public relations, or journalism. You will take courses such as multimedia, web design, and graphic design, learning applicable skills for a range of careers. Some programs you will learn include Photoshop, Vyond, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, WordPress, and more. This is a great track for those practical writers who have dreams of anything from digital entrepreneurship, photo editing, coding, and beyond. For additional information, reach out to your advisor. Have a great weekend!

Dr. Whitworth Receives Faculty of the Week Award

Dr. Whitworth, an associate professor here in the English department, was recently awarded "Faculty Member of the Week" by the university baseball team. Jared Marshman, a current student of his, advocated strongly for him, saying, "“I think Dr Whitworth deserves the award because obviously he’s battling cancer and MS4 and just the determination and perseverance to continue to come to class and teach us and not let his condition effect him."

The team chooses a new faculty member to award each week, basing their decisions on their service to their students as well as their performance inside and out of the classroom. On April 26, the baseball team will host a Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day at their double-header game, and all honorees are invited to attend. Mike Collins, head baseball coach, says that the award has brought a positive spirit to the team and the recipients alike. As he says, "The award forces the players to reflect on the contributions of people around them as well as witness the impact positivity can have on others."

Congrats to Dr. Whitworth!

The Washington Center

Last week, a representative from the Washington Center was on campus to educate students about internship opportunities in DC. The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Centers is a nonprofit center which works with hundreds of schools, offices, and companies to connect students with valuable internships in the DC area. Because of TWC's affiliation with Bloomsburg University, students are able to attend the center's workshops, live in the center's student housing, and be placed in an internship all at a low cost. You will receive credit and be able to graduate on time. For more information, email internships@bloomu.edu or visit the internship office at Student Services Center.
